Julia Chan reports at PV-Tech on a small scale desert system with 50 kW PV and some wind, as well as a 500 kWh battery. Thanks to this tweet by Keiichiro Sakurai for the link.
This displaces a diesel generator, which was expensive in fuel cost and unreliable. The system is used to pump water out of the ground and desalinate it.
It took only two weeks for the German renewable energy specialist juwi to build this. This is very small in scale, but if the locals like the performance, they may be interested in bringing some more water to the desert by installing more of the same.
