Margaret Marks reports on a possible violation of the copyright on a dictionary.
The site in question "dict.cc" is an open source based community-developed project under the GPL.
While there is obviously no copyright on single translations of words, Europe has copyright protection for databases under a 1996 Directive. That might make it illegal to copy all or a substantial part of the contents of an online dictionary and drop the GPL in the process.
